So I guess it’s safe to assume that whatever comes out of Jon Bon Jovi’s mouth is going to be nothing but tripe, be it a song or flippant declaration. As has been echoed throughout the web today, his gaffe-tastic “Steve Jobs is personally responsible for killing the music business” assertion will no doubt be regarded as one of the most egregious statements ever uttered by a Reagan era has-been. As if possessing the magical ability of tirade trifecta, Bon Jovi manages to emote fear, scorn, and mendacity all in one fantastically terrible grunt.

I suppose my biggest issue is that he’s not even being hyperbolic. His remarks simply have no basis in reality. Steve Jobs killed the music business? For the past decade Jobs and Apple have been at the forefront of revolutionizing the industry. Gone are the days of limited local music selections and big label bullying. Freedom of choice is here to stay.

While Bon Jovi pines for the days of yesteryear, his childhood anecdotes reveal more Luddism than nostalgia. And he may have gotten a thrill out of the unknown, yet I always cringed at the thought of forking out $12-$20 for a CD that likely only had 1-2 songs that I would listen to and enjoy. Call me crazy, but I actually prefer choice, freedom, and convenience.

Note to Bon Jovi: Stop making music. Your brand of “art” is what’s killing the business. However, you did have some great album covers.
